An AFCI, or Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, is a protective device that replaces standard circuit breakers in your electrical service panel. AFCIs provide enhanced protection against fire hazards caused by arc faults, which are dangerous electrical problems stemming from damaged or overheated wiring. The National Electrical Code has required AFCIs on most home circuits since 2008 due to their effectiveness.

If a circuit breaker trips, first unplug or turn off appliances in the affected room to reduce the load on the circuit. Then, locate your main breaker panel, find the tripped breaker (it will be in the off or middle position), and switch it to the 'off' position before switching it back to 'on'. If the breaker trips again, there may be a more serious underlying issue that requires professional diagnosis.
