In fact, the door was practically falling to pieces, barely opened, didn’t have a deadbolt that latched, and was secured by the type of interior flip-over bar that you see in hotel rooms. It certainly wasn’t usable! Clearly, this needed to be addressed. We first had a custom wood door made, sized a little bit big to allow for fitting. But of course, it needed to be installed, and the door frame, threshold, etc. were all in rough shape. Now, the husband is a handy guy, but it was pretty obvious that this project was way above his pay grade. I called ten different handyman services and half of them didn’t even call me back, but Bill promptly returned my message and made an appointment to come actually look at the job (I didn’t trust anyone giving an estimate from a texted photo!). It was clear from that visit that Bill really understood what was involved and was both able and willing to do a quality job, which was very reassuring. He emailed a nicely detailed estimate, and I was able to put a deposit on a credit card online. Bill was also very easy to reach via text message, which was great. It took a month or two to get worked into Bill’s schedule (weather didn’t help, as this couldn’t be done in the rain), but once he got started, he made our job his top priority. All in all, it took something like five days and involved building a new (square) door frame, fitting and hanging the new door, putting in and keying the knob and deadbolt, installing a new threshold, painting the door, frame, and trim, and even filling in the concrete and caulking along the edge of the house to help prevent water from coming in. I can’t even begin to describe all the skills it took to make this happen, and the end result is a GORGEOUS, FUNCTIONAL door that I can’t wait to actually use. Needless to say, I can’t recommend Bill highly enough. If you want something done right and you’re willing to pay for quality, give him a call! I’ve already got another job in mind for Bill, and he will definitely be my go-to handyman in the future.
