Luanne Warren - 1/5 — Anonymous I hired Active Heating to install a Navien tankless water heater, largely because they had so many 5‑star reviews on Google. Unfortunately, my experience has been the opposite of what their rating suggests, especially considering the installation cost just under $6,000. During the installation, I specifically asked about the gas line they were placing in front of my electrical panel. They assured me it was legal. In reality, the gas pipe was installed so close that it blocked access to the top two screws on the panel — you literally couldn’t open it without the pipe being in the way. Afterward, I looked up South Dakota’s code and Cannon Electric confirmed that this installation was illegal. Active Heating still refused to correct it until I made it clear I would report the issue to the SD Plumbing Commission and the SD Electrical Commission. They also installed the exhaust pipe so low that you hit your head on it, and they refused to fix that as well. On top of that, the exhaust was installed incorrectly, causing condensate to pool at the termination point and freeze. When I contacted them about this, they said they were “asking Navien how to fix a frozen exhaust” and still would not correct the improper installation. I now have to hire another company to repair their mistakes. After the installation, I also discovered that my dishwasher wasn’t getting hot water. The dishwasher wasn’t drawing enough flow to trigger the tankless heater — a well‑known issue with tankless systems, and one Navien specifically documents for installers along with the recommended fix. Active Heating dismissed the problem entirely and claimed they had never heard of it, even after I shared Navien’s own documentation with them. Overall, it feels like they install everything in whatever way is easiest for them, with no regard for proper standards, safety, or the customer’s experience. For the price I paid, the quality and professionalism were nowhere near acceptable.
